THE CAPTAIN - PRIYANTHA JOHN DE SILVA

Capt. John Priyantha de Silva born in 1952 is a native of Sri Lanka. He now lives in Long Island City, New York.

John as a child loved the ocean and had a dream to take to the seas someday. His first voyage was in 1973 as a trainee officer cadet on board a merchant ship. This was the beginning of a young sailor’s journey whose love for seafaring has taken him to every nook and corner of the world over the last 35 years.

John is a professionally qualified, knowledgeable and experienced seaman with his own Marine Surveys and Consultation Company called Eastcape Marine Services. As a senior licensed mariner, who has sailed for 35 years in the Merchant Navy of which eighteen (18) years as Master, he today holds the responsible position of Principal Surveyor of this organization.

Being a happily married family man, John maintains perfect balance in the “sea-shore” of life. At times having to spend extended periods at sea, working in damp and cold conditions, with no family around can be hard to endure. However as a professional who is totally focused on the job at hand he feels everyday spent aboard the ship is a challenge and there is never a moment of monotony. Sailing has also given him the opportunity to visit some of the most exotic places on earth…memories of which he has penned in his two books.

As an author Captain John Priyantha de Silva has proven to be exceptional, not only in choosing his subjects and penning his thoughts so perfectly, but the “shocking” courage he has in talking aloud his life’s ups and downs, so eloquently for the world to read, reminisce and appreciate.
Back at home time spent with the family is ‘time well spent’. He spends much of his time with the family, taking trips, visiting friends and relatives and engaging in every land borne activity, before taking to the sea once again.

A man of many moods, John as sailor is known to be critical thinker with excellent negotiation skills and a strong sense of responsibility. The same man as an author is creative, calm and thoughtful while the family man in him brings out the fun side of love, life and laughter
